Deal: OCZ 120GB Solid 3 Series – $129.99

by: admin Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

This is, as far as we can tell, the best deal yet on a 120GB Solid 3 and quite possibly even the best one to date on a 120GB drive based on the SandForce 2281 controller. TigerDirect is selling it for $129.99 including a $30 mail-in rebate. That makes it an exceptionally wallet-friendly entry into the world of SATA 6Gbps 500MB/s read performance (it is also backwards compatible with SATA II, but in that case it will not approach the max read/write performance figures). It ranks as the number 10 consumer/MLC drive in the September revision of our SSD toplist.

The Solid 3 series is OCZ’s entry-level model in its SATA III 6Gbps lineup. Its sequential read and write performance figures are still very impressive and close to the more expensive SandForce SF-2000 series SATA III drives: 500MB/s read and 450MB/s write. It is however slower at shoveling random 4K data around with “only” 20,000 IOPS. Since it’s a value drive, it is only available in 60GB and 120GB capacities, so this is the roomiest version of the Solid 3. Just like the other SandForce drives from OCZ it comes with native TRIM support and a 3-year warranty. View the product sheet here.
