by: Olan Dantes Monday, May 14th, 2012

Following the popularity of the SDD plus hard drive configuration, Transcend announces the release of their mSATA SSD, the MSA720. The SATA III SSD comes in 64 GB and 128 GB capacities with performances listed at 560 MB/s and 530 MB/s for sequential read and write respectively.

The MSA720 is just 3 by 5 cm and weighs around seven grams, making it a suitable cache drive for ultrabooks, tablet PCs and other mobile devices. Intel’s Ivy Bridge series of CPUs also bring with them the Z77 chipset whose motherboards include mSATA slots especially for caching.

The peak IOPS of 91,000 for the drive is one of the fastest listed for any mSATA SSD. The MSA720 is powered by LSI SandForce’s SF-2281 controller. Standard features such as support for TRIM and S.M.A.R.T are included as well as AES for added protection. No pricing information has been released.
