Z-Drive R2: Incredible PCI-E Performance

by: admin Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Z Drive R2The Z-Drive R2 is a PCI Express-based SSDs and as such not really intended for the consumer market, which is also reflected in the exorbitant price tag. But the enterprise market is increasingly interested in this type of extreme high-end drive. OCZ Technology has now presented its fourth generation Z-series drives and on paper they crush all competition.

Z-Drive R2 comes in three different versions; M84 R2, R2, R2, p84 and p88 and the unifying factor is a PCI-Express x8 interface and NAND memory chips of the MLC variant. Depending on the model and storage capacity, the Z R2 drives contain up to four Indilinx controllers connected in a RAID0 internally, resulting in mind-blowing performance – up to an incredible 1400MB/s in the top model p88.

Z-Drive R2 Models:

  • Z-Drive OCZ R2 M84 – 256GB to 1TB, 800/750 MB / s (read / write)
  • Z-Drive OCZ R2 p84 – 256GB to 1TB, 800/800 MB / s (read / write)
  • Z-Drive OCZ R2 p88 – 512GB to 2TB, 1400/1400 MB / s (read / write)

Check out the full specifications at OCZ. Of course, the PCI Express format restricts usage of the Z-drives to workstations. Prices start at around $1,200 up to more than $9,000 for the p88.
